Lunar Mansions in History
From Al Biruni, 11th Century: al-thuraiya, parvin, six stars from the shoulder of Taurus groups like a bunch of grapes. Generally, and especially by poets, the number is supposed to be seven, but this is a mistake. Although the term najm is applicable to every star, thuraiya alone is specially distinguished as al-najm.
From Abenragel, 11th Century:
Indian – Good for trading and revenge on enemies; indifferent for travel.
Dorotheos – Good for buying tame animals and hunting, for all matters involving fire, and for doing good. Bad for marriage, and making partnerships, especially with those more powerful. Bad for buying cattle or flocks, for planting trees, sowing or putting on new clothes. If captured, prison will be strong and long. Water journeys will bring fear and danger.
From Picatrix, 11th Century: The third Mansion is Azoraye (which is to say, the Pleiades). It is for the acquisition of all good [things]. When the Moon has passed into this Mansion, fashion the figure of a seated woman with her right hand raised over her head, and wrap [the image] in cloth, and cense it with musk, camphor, mastic and aromatic oils. And say: You, Annuncia, make such and such [to happen]; and speak your petition here to her for whatever good thing you wish. Fashion this image in a silver ring with a square table, and then place it upon your finger. When you have performed this as aforesaid, it will be as you wish and your request will be carried out with speed. And know that Annuncia is the name of the lord of this Mansion. And this is its figure.
From Agrippa, 16th Century: Achaomazone or Athoraye. Rainy ones or Pleiades. 25°42’51″ Aries. Profits sailors, huntsmen, alchemists. Happy fortune and every good thing: A woman well clothed, sitting in a chair, her right hand being lifted up on her head
From Robson, 20th Century: Al Thurayya. eta Taurus [Alcyone]. (Mansion 1:0GEM05′ in 2007, 29 Taurus-10 Gemini.) The Many Little Ones. Profitable to sailors, huntsmen and alchemists. With Moon here in the case of an election, plant and sow but do not marry or travel by water.
From Stockinger, 21st Century: Mansion 3: al-Turaija, The Many Little Ones, 25* Aries 42’ to 8* Taurus 34’. Related to the Seven Sisters or Pleiades. Signification: Favourable for sciences and for all who live outdoors, unfavourable for marriage and travel by water. Good for alchemical experiments and for working spells of love. Make pentacles for good fortune and happiness.
From Warnock, 21st Century: The root of the word Pleiades means fullness. This Mansion augurs abundance. It is a positive indication in questions of wealth, prosperity and career. It also may indicate full flowering in art, beauty and creativity. Yet the Pleiades also carry a warning. There can be too much of a good thing. We must be careful not to overindulge our appetites, be it literally in eating and drinking, or metaphorically, in our desire for good things in the material world. Keywords: Universal nature, auspicious fortune, fire of transformation, creative energy, beauty, abundance.
