These are the “Dog Days of Summer.” It’s the time of year marked by the appearance of the star Sirius (called Canis Major, or the Dog Star), in the eastern sky just before dawn. For the Egyptians, it also marks the beginning of the annual flooding of the Nile, which brings water and fertility to the parched desert sands.
With slow moving planets Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune in water signs for the rest of the year, we are still living in a watery world. Actions are colored by the desire to fulfill emotional needs and desires. If you are in tune with your emotional nature, it brings opportunities to find balance by integrating your emotions with your awareness. If you have been ignoring or resisting your emotions, don’t be surprised if events remind you do have them.
Sandstorms join the flood this month, as Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto align to form a tense triangle astrologers call a T-square. (For the astrologese-speaking readers, Jupiter opposes Pluto on Aug. 7 and squares Uranus on August 21.) The personal is politicized under these complex skies. You may feel judged by others for just doing what feels comfortable to you. The Moon and Venus join the fray with Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto on Aug. 23 and 24. Agreement may be difficult to achieve these days if no one is willing to compromise. You may need to be patient and allow the dust to settle.
Events are further charged by this month’s new and full Moons. The mew Moon in Leo on Aug. 6 reminds you to be true to your own creative urges, not to those of others. The full Moon in Aquarius on Aug. 21 (the second full Moon in Aquarius in a month) recommends you retain some emotional detachment and perspective no matter how intense your emotions – or the emotions of others – may be. As sages have said: forever master your emotions or surely they shall master you.
Mercury is speeding up and returning to his normal pace after his retrograde last month. By month’s end, you may start to feel that back-to-school fever set in. Before then, if the storms are too intense, dig in and wait it out. This too shall pass.
