Making Gold: Astrology, Alchemy & Magic in the Renaissance With Donna Woodwell & Russ von Ohlhausen Five Thursdays: August 13, 20, 27, September 3, 10; 8:30-10:30 pm ET/ 5:30-7:30 pm PT (Knowledge of how to read an astrological chart is useful, but not required, for this workshop.) Rather than accepting “fate” as decreed by the stars, Renaissance astrologers used the techniques of alchemy and magic to align with the forces of a living cosmos in order to “make gold” – on both a spiritual and mundane level. By learning these Renaissance techniques for balancing imbalances in astrological temperaments, you too can become a more astute observer of your own life, creating more adaptability and success under any circumstances. In this workshop, you’ll create an alchemical “lab manual” to track the results of your own alchemical experiment. In the last class, everyone will have an opportunity to share their results! You’ll also learn how-to techniques from Renaissance magical practice and alchemy that are geared for astrologers, such as making altars for a planet, creating astrological talismans and using planetary invocations. We’ll also explore the life stories of a few of the most influential Medieval and Renaissance astrologers, alchemists and magicians, including Albertus Magnus, Marsilio Ficino, Johannes Trithemius, Cornelius Agrippa, and Paracelsus. Over these five weeks, we’ll cover: Week 1: What ignited the rebirth of occult wisdom? Week 2: Who were the astrologer-mages? Week 3: Making Gold: Alchemy and Astrology Week 4: The Modern Astrologer’s Inheritance Week 5: Student presentations of alchemical experiment results Aside from the alchemical experiment, there is no required homework for this workshop. Sessions will list reading for more information, as well as practices you can try out for yourself.
The Art of Talisman Making Free Community Webinar Presented by Donna Woodwell Saturday, July 25, 2015 from 1:00-2:30 pm PDT / 4:00-5:30 pm EDT Talisman-making is an ancient astrological art that seeks to ground the stellar influences of a particular moment in time within an object on earth. Like capturing starlight in a bottle, the talisman enables an astrologer to shift favorable influence of one moment to another so you don’t have to wait for the perfect time to start a project. Donna Woodwell will give a brief guide to the principles of astrological correspondences, as well as how to elect a time and to craft talismans for yourself or for your clients.
Drawing Down the Divine: Astral Magic in the Ancient World With Joseph Crane & Donna Woodwell Five Thursdays: July 9, 16, 23, 30 and August 6, 8:30-10:30 pm ET/ 5:30-7:30 pm PT (Knowledge of how to read an astrological chart is useful, but not required, for this workshop.) Ancient Western esoteric tradition used the planets and stars as an allegory and pathway for personal and spiritual development. Called “Theurgy” or God-work, their esoteric religious practice, magic, and ritual has psychological and philosophical dimensions that continue to be relevant to astrology as we practice it now. In this workshop, you will explore the mystery and magical traditions of the late ancient culture that helped give rise to astrology. At the start of the course, you’ll “adopt a goddess” (or a god) to help you explore the god-work tradition from the inside. Along the way we’ll uncover the wisdom of the mystery schools of Eleusis, Dionysus and Mithras; the secrets of the Hermeticists; the immortal longings of the Neoplatonists, and how to experience the divine according to the Chaldean Oracles. The experiential exercises and the insights gained will not only deepen your astrology practice, but bring you into deeper communion with your own divine spark. Over these five weeks we’ll cover: Session 1: The Secrets of the Ancient Mystery Traditions Session 2: The Hermetic Tradition: Cosmos and Gods Session 3: Magic in the Hellenistic World (the Old Magic) Session 4: Astral Theurgy – “God-Work” and You Session 5: Magic, Magic Everywhere (what happened when you invited the deity to dinner) Aside from adopting a god/dess, there is no required homework for this workshop. Sessions will list reading for more information, as well as practices you can try out for yourself.

Astrologers are familiar with the 12 signs of the solar zodiac – Aries, Taurus, Gemini and so on. But did you know there is also a lunar zodiac? In India the lunar zodiac signs are called nakshatras, but in Western astrology they are known as the 28 Mansions of the Moon. In classical and Renaissance astrology, lunar mansions were considered an important tool for predictive, electional and magical astrology. In this lecture, Austin-based astrologer Donna Woodwell will explain the astronomy of the mansions, review the 28 Western lunar zodiac signs, and explore how to use them in chart interpretations and electional astrology. Bring along a copy of your own astrological chart, and you’ll be able to look up your own lunar zodiacal signs.
